“With His Merits to the Fatherland He Made His Name Immortal…”: Marking the 250th Anniversary of Histоriographer N.M. Karamzin (1766–1826)

Abstract

The article and the published document collection from the State Archive of the Ulyanovsk Region are to coincide with the 250th anniversary of N.M. Karamzin (1866 – 1826), Russian historiographer, writer, cultural luminary. The only official Russian historiographer, N.M. Karamzin prepared and published “History of the Russian State”, one of the first synthesis works on the history of Russia. The first eight volumes were published in 1818. Over the next five years N.M. Karamzin wrote and published the following three volumes: the ninth, the tenth and the eleventh; the twelfth, unfinished, was published after his death by his friend earl D.N. Bludov. This fundamental work made N.M. Karamzin’s name known all over Russia. Stand-alone and general works of Russian historians and their assessment, as well as life and activities of the researchers themselves, have an important place in historical science. Issues of studying the history of the Russian state retain their significance. The authors conclude that interest in the person of N.M. Karamzin has not yet dried up. New published documents are designed to comply with the request of scholars and society. The collection of documents from the archive fonds, which is being introduced into scientific use for the first time, acquaints readers with documents revealing “the deep respect of the inhabitants of Simbirsk to merits and talents” of the patriot. The article focuses on activities of the Simbirsk provincial zemstvo, Ministry of National Education, and the Committee of the Karamzin public library in perpetuating the memory of the illustrious historiographer in the Simbirsk province.
