Moral Bearings of the Generation of the Victors in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945
Abstract
Drawing on archival documents from the personal provenance fond of Nikolai Aleksandrovich Rubakin, an eminent Russian bibliographer, founder of the Institute of Bibliopsychology in Geneve (1916), the author of the article assesses moral bearings of girls gathered from occupied territories of the USSR and brought to Germany in the days of the Great Patriotic War. The author contends that materials of the personal provenance fond of Nikolai Rubakin, such as questionnaire for the dislocated civilians, allow reconstruct the mindset, values, personal character of the wartime generation – qualities from which sprang the valour and the heroism of the Russian people and their victory in the war. The author sees the basis of the respondents’ mindset in values of Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian national identity, such as peace, love, morality, honesty, patriotism, mercy, culture, industry, austerity, self-sacrifice, Motherland. For the first time the author introduces into scientific use the questionnaire materials on assessment of western life-style by the Russian prisoners-of-war in the relocation camps. The article deals with issues connected with “Agreement Relating to Prisoners of War and Civilians Liberated by Forces Operating Under Soviet Command and Forces Operating Under United States of America Command” signed in February, 1945 during the Yalta Conference. Using the method of N.A. Rubakin the author has organized a questionnaire survey of contemporary youth, which has discovered a deformation of their moral bearings. The author believes that the questionnaire materials preserved in the N.A. Rubakin personal provenance fond are an importance source for researching and shaping methods of personal moral development of modern school graduates as citizens and patriots in accordance with “Education Development Strategy in the Russian Federation up to 2025”. She concludes that actualization of sources from personal provenance fonds, including that of N.A. Rubakin, is an important condition of reviving national traditions in education of the youth.
