Abstract

In 2014 several manuscripts from the Russian State Archive of Ancient Acts (RGADA) were transferred to the Documents Restoration Laboratory of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Of greatest value among them was the Charter of the Grand Prince of Moscow Vasili III Ivanovich to the Smolenks Citizens for Rights and Privileges, a unique historical document dated July 10, 1514. At the time of transfer to the Laboratory the charter was in a critical condition and for this reason was unavailable to researchers. Thus, the objective was to return the document into scientific use. Due to a specific set of problems associated with safety of the manuscript, standard methods of restoration were inapplicable. Therefore, a complex physical-chemical and microbiological analysis of the document was carried out, which allowed develop and successfully apply a custom restoration scheme using specially adopted methods, technologies and restoration materials. For the first time removal of old duplicating layers was carried out without moistening the threadbare parchment basis. The work resulted in complete recovery of the document basis. The manuscript was made available for researchers, as well as reproduction in scientific journals.
