Foreign Archival Rossica in Russian Periodicals: A Publications Review, 2013

Abstract

The article reviews publications of Foreign Archival Rossica in the Russian magazines in 2013 and includes statistical analysis. It is noted that periodicals appear as promising sources of information on Russian documents in foreign archives. 63 publications drawing on documents from foreign archives, libraries, and museums are analyzed. There are documents and articles touching upon biographies of Russian emigrants, activities of various public organizations, foundation and activities of foreign archives, libraries, museums, private collections, etc. The majority of publications deal with history of the 20th century. Publications analysis shows that the authors make abundant use of documents from archives all over the world. Documents from the European countries archives and those of America are among most significant and most cited (68,4 and 27,2% respectively). Unfortunately, documents from the other national archives, which are of equal significance for studying Russian history, are poorly studied and little used. The USA archival documents cited in the studied articles are mostly from the Bakhmeteff Archive of Russian and East European Culture (Columbia University) and from the Hoover Institution Library and Archives (Stanford University). The archives of most European countries hold documents on various periods of Russian history. The majority of documents from European archives, which were used in the analyzed publications, come from archives of Great Britain, Poland, Ukraine, and France. The majority of documents from the former Soviet republics come from archives of Belarus and Ukraine. It should be noted that documents from private archives have been used more actively in 2013. While analyzed materials are just a part of articles published in Russian periodicals in 2013, which draw from Foreign Archival Rossica, the research gives true and fair presentation of main trends in the scholarship of the area, as well as demonstrates active use of archival documents.
