Professor T. I. Khorkhordina's monograph "Personal Archives in Russia" has been published

Abstract

This review is devoted to the fundamental monograph by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor T. I. Khorkhordina, "Archives of Personal Origin in Russia." In describing the monograph's contents, the reviewer notes that the work provides the first comprehensive examination of the problem of the formation, preservation, development, and use of personal documents, conceptualizing and integrating them from the emergence of writing in Ancient Rus' to the present day. Emphasizing the significant contribution of T. I. Khorkhordina's research to the theory and practice of archival science, the reviewer draws particular attention to the author's introduction of definitions that reveal spiritual and moral meanings into the conceptual framework of the problem. She also notes T. I. Khorkhordina's methodological development of ideas for a synergetic approach to the analysis of personal documents, relying on the inseparable unity of the realities of historical existence and its influence on the spiritual aspirations and self-awareness of the individual as a creator of archives. It is concluded that the monograph is characterized by a pronounced anthropological approach. This study analyzes a historical perspective on the complex and dramatic process of forming, collecting, and assembling personal archives, including methodological developments. It also highlights international experience in this field, beginning with the discussion of the problem of collecting and preserving personal archives at the International Congress of Archivists and Librarians in Brussels in 1910. The reader is introduced to the names of collectors and the fates of collections. In this sense, the fates of manuscripts and the lives of the people who created, collected, and reflected on them are intertwined. It analyzes historical and archival thinking regarding archives and documents of personal origin, as well as the methods for their discovery.
