Periodical Press in the Agricultural Education in the Transbaikal Region in 1912–1926: From Materials of the Transbaikal State Archive
Abstract
The article examines the influence of periodical press on agricultural education in the Transbaikal region on example of the Transbaikal Landowner magazine, and papers “Transbaikal Peasant”, “Young Peasant”, as well as other documents from the State Archive of Transbaikal Krai. Since most studies on the subject focus on the source study, this article considers the periodical press not just as a source, but as an instrument for popularization of agricultural knowledge. The study offers comparative analysis of the main trends and methods of work, estimates the circulation of agronomic periodical press in prerevolutionary Russia and Soviet Russia and its relationship with the agronomists. Researched data shows that the Soviet periodical press had great influence on the agricultural culture of the Transbaikal region. Primarily, this was due to much cultural work among the masses under the control of the party and its various propaganda agencies. For this reason the article draws widely on party documents: correspondence with the raikoms (regional committees) of the CPSU (b), circular letter on forms summer jobs for pioneers, minutes of the Chita okruzhkom (district committee) of the CPSU (b), annual reports of agricultural groups. Having reviewed methods of cultural and educational work among the peasants and composition of the readership, the author assesses the educational role of periodical press in the Transbaikal region. She concludes that these methods of work were an auxiliary element in the system of non-formal agricultural education and an important means in promoting progressive methods of farming.
