The Golden Type

The art of books and periodicals in the 19th, 20th and 21th centuries

October 9 - 11 , 2023

"Golden type" is William Morris' dream of an ideal font combining the beauty of Roman inscriptions, medieval manuscripts, Renaissance incunabula and Plantin and Elsevier editions. The craft of creating and decorating a book, and then a magazine, has a rich history. The art of typeface and layout, title page and binding, together with the art of illustrator and designer, has created and still is creating outstanding works worthy of a place in the history of world culture. The art of the art book, such as albums, monographs, illustrated exhibition catalogs, art magazines is of special interest. The twentieth’ century culture owes greatly to the activities of the publishing houses of Knebel and Abrams, Limited Editions and Academia, Skira and Iskousstvo, as well as to the magazines "Simplicissimus" and Golden Fleece, "Jugend" and Old Years / Stariye gody. The era of electronic information summed up some types of publications and gave impetus to the development of others, especially to an artist's book, illustrated classics, a visual guide and a dictionary. This era provided the flourish of the renewed publishing houses, such as Dorling Kindersley and Mondadori, Ivan Limbach and Vita Nova, Slovo and Malevich. The conference is dedicated to artistic means and masterpieces of book and magazine design from the era of Romanticism to the present day, to the artists and designers, publishers and publishing houses.
